Basic Facts

Children should be able to make sense of addition and multiplication before they try to memorise their tables. When they do understand, it is important that they over learn their basic facts, so they have instant recall.

To help children make the connections it is important to use every day vocabulary. e.g. For multiplication using everyday objects or subjects talk about groups of, teams of, packets of, piles of etc. For division talk about sharing evenly, share between, how many sets of etc. 

Basic facts are progressive. Your child will know what basic fact they are learning. If they appear unsure, please check with their teacher.
