Our Learning Areas
Learning areas are broad groupings of knowledge.
In our Catholic Schools there are nine which are considered essential for general education:
The Arts, English, Health & Physical Education, Learning Languages (Years 7 & 8), Mathematics & Statistics, Religious Education, Science, Social Sciences and Technology.
In our school we aim to integrate the learning, as much as possible, in relevant and motivating contexts.
Mathematics & Statistics
In mathematics and statistics, students explore relationships in quantities, space and data and learn to express these relationships in ways that help them to make sense of the world around them.
Religious Education
In Religious Education, students learn about what the Catholic Church believes, celebrates, lives and prays and are assisted to develop a relationship with God and to be living witnesses to the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, always recognising that this depends on each child’s free faith response.
Information Communication Technology
Just like the ability to read and write, ICT literacy is an essential life skill – an economic and social necessity. “Without [ICT literacy], there is a risk that people will be cut off from job opportunities and unable to take part in the full life of the community” (NZ Government, 2005, p18).
We aim to integrate ICT into all areas of the children’s learning.
Learning Languages
In learning languages, students learn to communicate in an additional language, develop their capacity to learn further languages, and explore different world views in relation to their own.
Science
In science, students explore how both the natural physical world and science itself work so that they can participate as critical, informed and responsible citizens in a society in which science plays a significant role.
Social Sciences
In social sciences, students explore how societies work and how they can participate and take action as critical, informed and responsible citizens.
Technology
In technology, students learn to be innovative developers of products and systems and discerning consumers who will make a difference in the world.
The Arts
In the arts, students explore, refine, and communicate ideas as they connect thinking, imagination, senses, and feelings to create works and respond to the works of others.
English
In English, students study, use and enjoy language and literature, communicated orally, visually or in writing.
Physical Education
In health and physical education, students learn about their own well-being and that of others and society, in health-related and movement contexts.
